Hello Everyone!

Time flies, and an update has been long due. A new step has been achieved in this release, with strong contributions from Graham Louth. This shows the power of open source as anyone can propose improvements and have them incorporated for the benefits of all.

Here are the new features:

  • New boat shapes, ranging from 420/470 to 29er, 49er, and the classical Firefly and Topper
  • Select a full track with Shift+click
  • A jib, which can be trimmed with "," and "."
  • A Gennaker on the keelboat, skiffs and the tornado, trimmable with Ctrl + "," and "."
  • Projection transform, allowing to rotate and tilt the diagram and show a different perspective
  • A Follow Track mode in the animations, to better understand each boat's point of view
  • Improvements for the marks: change color, edit their label, add an arrow for clockwise/anticlockwise

Linux

Dear all,

So that you know everything is still moving, I have been busy in the previous weeks in getting Boat Scenario accepted to Debian Linux distribution, which happened last sunday. As a result, Debian unstable users can now download boats directly from the package system.

There follows some kind of domino effect: pretty soon the Debian Testing users will have the package available as well.

Another domino effect is that Ubuntu is following the steps of Debian, and packages for Karmic version are becoming available now.

I will keep the early packages that I provide on this site, as they still are useful to Debian Testing and Ubuntu Jaunty users.

On the feature side, I have been slower, sorry... There is already a good spanish translation ready, and some option to toggle the trajectory display. I am working on displaying flags on boats at the moment, and expect some more work before I could release current june.

Enjoy Sailing!

Translators

Hello everyone!

You find Boat Scenario interesting tool and you use it from time to time?

Great!

I propose you to bring it one step further and help with translation so that Boat Scenario speaks your language.

The steps are rather easy and don't require any programming experience. 10 minutes of your time are needed.

First, you will need a template file, look here if your language is not translated already. If it is present it is still likely that new strings are in need for translation. you may still want to review the translation.

You can then download the file clicking on the "raw" link at the right of the name. If you do not find your language here you will download the generic template here

Second, you will want to setup the translating tool which is called Qt Linguist. You may find installable versions for Windows and Mac here. If you are on Linux your distribution has a package for that, most likely qt-dev-tools.

You could even do without the tool if you understand the file format which is xml and bring the translations in the relevant tags.

Then, up you are translating as much as you can. Running the program in parallel may help you identify where all those strings are.

Last, save your work and send back the .ts file to tgridel at users.berlios.de, ideally naming it boats_<language code>.ts like boats_fr.ts

Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Boats 200902 for Mac

Mac Users rejoice!

After some hard work performed by JP Cordonnier, a Mac Universal Bundle will introduce Boat Scenario to you.

The Bundle has been compiled for Mac OSX 10.3.9 and later and should work for PPC and Intel architectures. It is available on the Download page.

The functionality is equivalent to release 200902.

This tool is now available for Windows, Linux and Mac, and will let you create the same Scenarios on all those platforms.

The product is provided under the Open Source GPL licence.

Boats 200902 Released

Hello Everyone!

After some time a new version of Boat Scenario has arrived. In the feature list is:

  • configurable zone at marks
  • boats resized to real world size
  • multiple series in a scenario
  • a list widget for tracks edition
  • color chooser for tracks
  • nicer sail drawing

and a startboat.

If you used earlier versions of Boats, you will notice that all the boats have been resized to permit multiple series on the same scenario. That means your earlier diagrams would need to be scaled as well. There is no conversion for rescaling your ealier scenarios builtin, but should you need those beloved you can still calculate the corrected positions and edit the files by hand. The scaling factors are

- 83% for keelboat

- 33% for laser

- 19% for optimist

- 51% for tornado

Boats 200811 released

After slightly more than one week time and a few comments from users, version 200811 hits the Download area.

There are a couple minor corrections about selection, animation timer and default scene real estate, and a new Zoom menu to better view the scenario.

Thanks to everyone who brought feedback for this first release, be sure that activity is still going on and new features under way.

Boats 200811 rc1 released

As promised, version 200811 is now available for download.

Windows users will find a zipped binary ready to use.

Linux users need more work in downloading the source code and compiling it. If enough people ask for an Ubuntu or Debian package, I will provide one.

I am looking for a Mac power user who doesn't faint at the hearing of Xcode, in order to make a Mac bundle for others to use. Otherwise you can still use the Windows binary with your emulator.

Everything is in the Download page.

Boats is licensed under the GPL, which means it is open source and you are encouraged to distribute it, especially if you want your scenarios to be used.

For the curious, I do provide a Changelog from previous version.

Also a Documentation is available.

I am interested in your feedback, which may lead to further evolutions...

Happy Scenario making!

Boats 200810 released

This version is for the adventurous who want to try the tool. Although it needs some more work to be fully functional, it is quite useable and you can already make nice diagrams out of it.

I don't know yet how often releases will be made, but I hope the cycles to be short to gather feedback from you.

Please enjoy it and don't hesitate to post comments.
